Medical Laboratory Technician

Perform laboratory tests that provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities                           

  • Perform daily start-up of laboratory equipment
  • Maintain daily logs
  • Recognize abnormalities and critical values and notify clinics as required per policy
  • Document all requests and results of lab work accurately
  • Perform daily quality control and cleaning procedures according to guidelines
  • Order and stock supplies weekly
  • Respond to all lab inquiries quickly and accurately
  • Ensure that all tasks are completed accurately and efficiently
  • Regular and timely attendance to ensure efficient lab operations
  • Assist in  training clinical laboratory technicians or others as needed
  • Perform quality control, calibrations, and troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Perform quality assurance review measures as assigned
  • Assist with processing and review of proficiency testing
  • Assist the laboratory manager with data collection and competency assessments as needed
  • Exhibits flexibility with scheduling as needed to ensure adequate staffing for workload
  • Provide laboratory assistance and troubleshooting to clinic staff as needed
  • Perform preparation for regulatory surveys for central and clinic locations as needed
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • Medical Laboratory  Technician/  Technologist
  • ASCP certification (or equivalent ) preferred
  • Experience with microbiology, chemistry analyzers, and immunoassays preferred

Physical Demands/Work Environment                         

  • Standing for long periods regularly
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must regularly lift and/or move 10 pounds or more
  • Potential exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles

Testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance, and for reporting test results, and should only perform those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and that are within the individual’s skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities.

Testing personnel must:

• Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient results.

• Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.

• Adhere to laboratory’s quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.

• Follow the laboratory’s policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.

• Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor.

• Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
